Having access to a diverse, interesting set of listings is important to our customers, and at Poloniex we strive to provide this with our ever-expanding catalogue of supported currencies. At the same time, cryptocurrency is still in early stages of adoption globally and thus has been treated differently by regulatory regimes around the world. As we look to grow Poloniex's global presence while also remaining compliant with the local regulations of the countries that our customers reside in, you may find that we offer some assets that are available in certain countries and not available in others. We call these assets “geofenced assets” because their availability is dependent on your specific geolocation. Below, you will find instructions on how to see if a particular asset is available in your jurisdiction and other information related to geofenced asset listings.
Is there any benefit for us as users of Poloniex?
Yes. In the past, we have been unable to support certain assets globally because of particular restrictions in just one jurisdiction. Geofencing assets will enable us to provide more assets, more quickly to our users around the world.
What information does Poloniex use to determine my jurisdiction?
We look at the country associated with your verified address on your profile page.
How do I know if an asset is not available in my jurisdiction?
Take a look at our asset availability page and scroll down the page to find the asset in question. Any asset-specific restrictions will be noted in the right-hand column of the page.
Will you geofence assets that are already on Poloniex?
In some cases, we may need to geofence an existing asset in order to comply with the shifting regulatory landscape in specific jurisdictions. While we reserve the right to geofence an asset at any time, we will endeavor to make the process as painless as possible for customers by taking measures such as:
- Providing you with advance notice before we limit buy and deposit functionality
- Reminding you with multiple forms of communication during the period leading up to any changes
What happens if I hold an asset that is restricted in my jurisdiction?
You will find that you are able to withdraw your asset to an external address. You will not be able to deposit more of the restricted asset or trade it on Poloniex markets.
Help! Poloniex thinks I am in the wrong jurisdiction and I can’t trade my asset.
If you find that an asset that you are attempting to trade is off-limits, and you believe that this is a mistake after checking our asset availability page, please create a support ticket and we will be happy to take a look into your case!
